4 Foods to Reduce Inflammation

Exercise does so many great things for the body, like promote cardiovascular health, build muscle tissue, release endorphins and strengthen bones. However, some forms of exercise, especially long bouts of intense activity, can increase inflammation markers in your body, which, along with improper nutrition and chronic stress, may make you more prone to injury. This isn't a reason to give up or avoid exercise! Instead, make sure to include good food choices that help lessen your inflammation and promote recovery. Here are 4 foods will anti-inflammatory properties:

  1. Fish: Certain fish, like salmon and tuna, contain Omega-3 fat that can reduce inflammation. Aim to get at least two servings of these fish per week for anti-inflammatory benefits. Not a fan of fish? An Omega-3 supplement and plant-based food sources, like chia, hemp and flax seeds, and walnuts can help reduce inflammation as well.

  2. Turmeric: This spice contains a compound called curcumin that has powerful anti-inflammatory benefits. While supplements will provide the most concentrated source of turmeric, powdered and fresh turmeric is easy to add into your everyday cooking as well. Add fresh turmeric root into a smoothie or use ground turmeric spice in marinades, roasted veggies, soups and salad dressing.

  3. Cherries: This fruit contains tons of antioxidants and compounds that are known to reduce inflammation. You have likely seen tart cherry juice promoted for its post exercise anti- inflammatory benefits, and while there may be benefit here, try incorporating fresh or frozen cherries into your meals and snacks before jumping to juice. Whole cherries will provide the same anti-inflammatory perks while also boosting your fiber intake to create a more satisfying snack.

  4. Green tea: While not a food, green tea is easy enough to incorporate into your daily routine and provides plenty of anti-inflammatory benefits. The antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits in green tea have been linked to reduced risk of heart disease and cancer, and inhibits inflammatory compounds in your body. Hot or cold, try adding green tea to your daily hydration for its health benefits and mild caffeine boost.
